I knew before we went in to have the D&C done that this pregnancy was different than the last. We didn’t get to see our last baby, and we had only just found out that we were pregnant. This time around, we knew about the baby for nearly 44 days, we had multiple ultrasounds, blood work after blood work, appointment after appointment.
I knew I would have a harder time with this miscarriage, having gotten so attached and been so positive that this would work. As someone who loves to read, I knew that finding a book would help me better than anything else so I turned to Amazon. I found, The Worst Girl Gang Ever: A survival guide for navigating miscarriage and pregnancy loss. They never made me feel like my early losses were something to be ashamed about, or that they didn’t matter as much as a late miscarriage or pregnancy loss. They made it clear that these babies are celebrated and loved, no matter how far along we are when we lose them.
Most importantly, this book said all the right things including, “Sometimes shit happens for no good reason at all.” It was never, “At least it was early,” “At least you can get pregnant,’ or “At least you can try again!” We know these statements come from people who mean well, but God damn they suck.
This book shared coping skills, stories from other parents of loss, ways to memorialize baby, all with a bit of humor and a whole lot of love. Best of all, they have a podcast, too! Check out The Worst Girl Gang Ever when you get in the mood to listen to something new! Their accents make it even better.
Please, let me know what books you’ve found helpful, so we can create a list for parents going through the same trials and shitty situations.
